Celebrating 60 Years of Listening in Hull

Case Study Hull Samaritans

The team at Tradeprint were very proud to be asked to produce a beautiful perfect-bound book in celebration of 60 years of listening by the Samaritans in Hull. The production of this book started life as a bespoke quote and once the ball gets rolling on these customised projects we like to follow up with a personal service.

In words taken from the foreword by Rob Carlisle, Director, Hull Samaritans Rob explains the incredible journey from back in the 1960s to the present day.

“We are proud to be celebrating 60 years of listening by Samaritans in Hull. How times have changed. Back in the 1960s, volunteers would wait at the branch for the phone to ring. Often there would be no calls in the nighttime. In 1965 the Hull branch received 400 calls in the entire year. In 2020 we received 11,000.

Our 80 volunteers are part of the national organisation that provides 24/7 listening to people who need emotional support. Every 7 seconds Samaritans receives a call for help.

We are needed more than ever. Loneliness is a constant issue, and the effects were made far worse during the wretched Covid-19 crisis. Being listened to is a simple basic act which so many people are denied. What can be better than to be really listened to?

We listen – whether it’s to someone who hasn’t spoken to anybody for days or to someone who feels they can’t go on.

We listen. We are there to provide a voice that cares. Calls can be very special, sometimes painful, often rewarding. It is a privilege knowing that for that moment in time you have made a difference. We do not judge or advise but we are there for those who have nobody to hear them.”

Chad Varah, founder of Samaritans once said:
‘There are people in this world who seem to be “ordinary” but who turn out to be extraordinary. They give their total attention. They listen and listen and listen without interrupting… We call them Samaritans.’

The Printing Process

Once we had fully discussed the brief, we started work in earnest with the proofing and printing process. The first job was to send out high-resolution digital proofs prior to production along with laser proofs so the Hull Samaritans team could confirm pagination and page order.
We then supplied plain paper dummies just before production in a range of paper stocks to allow the team at Hull Samaritans to choose the correct look and feel for the project.

Their content is rich in colour and in content specifically where reproductions of artwork needed to be replicated so we worked hard on the whole process to ensure the results reflected the requirements.

We like to keep in touch throughout these types of jobs so constant updates throughout production ensured a very enjoyable collaboration. We were proud to produce such an excellent book that we hope will generate funds for what is a very important organisation.
