What Should I Prioritse In Print?

Ask the Print Experts
Every week, we help thousands of customers prepare artwork, choose products and avoid costly printing mistakes. These are the questions we're asked most often, along with the advice we'd give if we were sitting next to you.

What's Actually Worth Spending Money On?

Not everything all at once. You might have great plans but a small budget, and those can be built on, but you need a proper foundation to start your print marketing journey.

If your budget is limited, we'd prioritise:

  • Professional artwork.
  • Good photography.
  • The right paper stock.
  • A product that's appropriate for the job.
  • A finish that supports how it'll be used.

Things we'd spend less time worrying about?

  • Ultra-thick paper just because it's thicker.
  • Every premium finish available. Is a finish like SpotUV gorgeous and enviable?  Yes, but you don't have to use it on everything.
  • Ordering far more than you'll ever use. Don't blast your budget on one item; be mindful of what's realistic in terms of use and distribution, and whether your message, brand or offer may change over time.

The biggest improvements usually come from making better decisions, not simply spending more.

If you need print that works really hard for you but is cost-effective, think of:

  • Business Cards - these are not just business cards; they can be used for all sorts of uses where a small print is required.  Appointment cards, loyalty cards, jewellery backing, QR codes, promotions

  • Flyers - in the most popular A5 size, these can convert from a handout to a menu to a notice

  • Leaflets - If you have more info than will fit onto a flyer, these do the job perfectly.
  • Brochures - If you have a catalogue or wide offering that needs space to be unpacked, these are the best.
  • Boards for signage - wayfinding, new business signage, shop frontage

  • Roller Banners - for portable or pop-up promotions

  • Clothing and Merchandise - Best for staff and promotional giveaways and then as an additional revenue stream to sell on once you're underway.

There's nothing wrong with starting small, sorting out what you need to prioritise first, and then growing on it with add-ons.
